Welcome to Elisha's Space, a sanctuary for healing, growth, and for the kind of honest conversations that actually change things.

I'm Elisha, your host, a counselor, an author, and someone who has sat in the same stuck places you have.

If you've been listening for a while, I see you and I'm glad that you're back. If you're new here, welcome home.

Today's episode is practical. Clinical, but pastoral.

So stay with me.

The in-between place no one prepares you for

You did the hard part. You made the decision. You filed, you hired the attorney, you told your safe people.

And then... nothing. No signature. No response. Another continued date. Another promise that moves.

You are straddling a fence — one leg toward life after divorce, one leg still legally tied. And that in-between place leaves you unsteady.

Your hands are shaking, or your chest is tight and you can't figure out why. You check the portal again. You re-read the text again. And then shame whispers, "What is wrong with me?"

Nothing is wrong with you. Your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It's just stuck.

Knowledge isn't just power for trauma survivors — knowledge is safety. Let's name what's happening so your nervous system can settle.

This is pastoral-clinical education, not legal advice and not therapy. If you are unsafe, please contact your local domestic violence hotline and your attorney for a safety plan.

Delay is not always control. But sometimes it is.

Sometimes delay is logistics — dockets, lawyers, paperwork.

Delay becomes control when it follows a repeated pattern:

  1. Intermittent reinforcement: Hope, then withdraw. A court date with no signature. A public post, then silence. Future-faking.
  2. Moving goalposts: First it was after mediation, then after the next hearing, then silence. Promises made in 7 days, broken over 90 days.
  3. Money as the messenger: Credits, splits, royalties, support used to communicate what direct negotiation won't resolve. Now you're tracking two problems — the legal case and the implied message. That doubles decision fatigue.

You don't keep checking because you're weak. You keep checking because unpredictability trains vigilance.

This is why gaslighting and emotional abuse in divorce feel so dysregulating. You're comparing your private uncertainty to someone else's public certainty and concluding you're behind. You're comparing a performance to a process. Those are different data sets.

His peace is not dependent on your circumstances being resolved. It is a regulated nervous system in the presence of a safe God.

Why the legal tie is such a powerful hook

When someone with narcissistic-type tendencies is losing control — limited access, limited communication, no contact — the legal tie may become the last point of leverage.

In my office I've seen this pattern: They will use the legal system to traumatize you as much as they can. They will weaponize the children you share. They will create narratives around property.

Their attempt is to constantly keep you in a hypervigilant state. They want you dysregulated. They want you to crash out.

Just because they're crashing out does not mean you have to crash out. Especially in a legal situation.

This is classic in narcissistic abuse untangling: shifting criteria, private rules that change, increasing ambiguity. You leave more confused than when you entered. That confusion is data.

The S.A.F.E. Boundary Framework for this season

I don't believe in just listing the pain without giving you a guide forward. This is my S.A.F.E. Boundary Framework, in purely behavioral terms:

S — Sense: What pattern are you observing? Name the body cue first. Tight chest? Shallow breath? Urge to text 10 times? That alarm is information, not disobedience.

A — Assess: Is it consistent or intermittent over 90 days? Look at dates, filings, and actions — not announcements. Write the last three stated deadlines. Next to each, write what actually happened, just the facts. Where did the goalpost move without written explanation?

F — Filter: Does this interaction produce clarity or confusion? Process has three features: written timelines, third-party verification, decreasing ambiguity over time. Control pattern has three different features: shifting criteria, private rules that change, increasing ambiguity.

E — Establish: What access and communication channel changes today even while I wait? Make it specific, observable, and time bound. Example: "I will communicate once by email on Tuesdays about logistics only. I will not text to make him feel better."

That is not avoidance. That is you reducing reinforcement for checking behavior. That is you protecting your peace.

You don't have to respond to 500 texts at their frequency to solve the ambiguity. One documented email can be enough. Talk to your attorney about what fits your case.

Try it now: 4-Minute Clarity Audit

Let's do it. This isn't visualization, this is physiology.

  1. Place both hands on your chest. Feel the rise and fall. Is there tension there? Tightness in your jaw, your forehead?
  2. Breathe in for 4... hold... and out slow. Let your nervous system hear that you are not running from it.
  3. On paper, list: Deadline 1:  What happened. Deadline 2: What happened. Deadline 3:  What happened.
  4. Circle any move without written explanation. That is your pattern to bring to your attorney and your counselor — not to your ex at midnight in high activation.

Don't have a hard conversation in high activation.

Faith for the waiting room

For my Christian sisters asking about Christian divorce recovery:

God is not confused by paperwork. You can be legally bound and spiritually anchored at the same time.

"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:7

You are not behind because someone else debuted a new relationship, a new song, a new interview while your tie remains. Public closure without private closure creates cognitive dissonance. Bring your eyes back to your own process.

Father, I am grateful that you made these bodies, that you knit together the very nervous systems that we are learning to regulate. Teach us to wait with clarity, not hypervigilance. Amen.

Your 7-day challenge

For the next 7 days:

  1. Do the Clarity Audit once daily.
  2. Keep one communication rule (day, channel, logistics-only).
  3. No portal-checking after 8pm. Let your body rest.
